Practice closures

West Street Surgery is closed daily between 13:00 and 14:00 for staff training and meetings.

If you call the surgery during our lunchtime closure, and your call is medically urgent you will have the option to be put through to our urgent helpline. If it is not urgent, you will be asked to call back at 14:00.

Patients will also notice that once a month West Street Surgery shuts for the afternoon for training purposes. This is called a PLZ afternoon, which stands for Protected Learning Zone, and is commissioned by Bedfordshire CCG.

It is mandatory for every surgery in Bedfordshire to take part. This ensures that all staff members are up to date on training this includes all Doctors and nurses.

If you need to speak with a healthcare professional urgently when we are closed you will be asked to call NHS 111 who is commissioned to support our service from 14:00 on those afternoons.

Out of hours service

If you require a doctor or advice urgently outside normal surgery hours, please call 111. The recorded message will give you the number to ring for the duty doctor or a deputising service.

Please note, this service is for emergencies which require immediate attention. The doctor may speak with you over the phone and give advice, but will only visit you if they feel it cannot wait for surgery to open.

Evening and weekend access

You can now book a GP (family doctor) appointment over the weekend or evening at a GP surgery in Chiltern Hills PCN Extended Access. This is called Chiltern Vale Extended Access.

A small number of specific surgeries will be open on different days and times to create more options for patients.

Opening hours for extended access

Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday: 18:30-20:00

Wednesday and Friday – 18:30-21:30

Saturday – 08:30-16:00

Important note: not all locations will be open each day or each session. You must book an appointment via your GP practice first.

Please let us know if you wish to cancel an appointment.

Who is providing this service?

Chiltern Vale Locality has been asked by the local clinical commissioning group (BCCG), the NHS organisation who pay for health services in Bedfordshire, to run the service.

This company is formed from 6 GP practices in Chiltern Vale:

  • Caddington Surgery
  • Kirby Road Surgery
  • Priory Gardens Surgery
  • West Street Surgery
  • Kingsbury Court Surgery
  • Eastgate Surgery

These practices will work with all nine practices in the area to make sure that patients are able to book appointments.

How do I get an appointment?

You can get an appointment by calling the practice during normal working hours. You may be asked some questions to check that it is the best service for your needs.

All patients will have a 15 minute booked appointment slot. If you are late it may not be possible to see you in that session, and you will need a new appointment.
