Training Practice
West Street Surgery has been approved as a GP Training Practice, able to offer training posts for both postgraduate and undergraduate doctors in General Practice.
The accreditation process took over twelve months, and has been achieved through the hard work and dedication of the entire Practice Team. Following an extensive GP Trainer training course, Dr Price, Dr White, Dr Jimenez, Dr Al-Nahi and Dr Savla have all achieved individual trainer status.
The postgraduate registrars (GP Trainees) attached to the practice will have already spent at least 3 years or more in hospital medicine since qualifying as a doctor. These doctors spend a further three years full time, longer if part time, working in General Practice and Hospital settings as part of their training rotation to become qualified GPs.
West Street Surgery has been allocated two registrars (Spring 2024) Dr Shabir and Dr Gandhi, both in their final year of training. They have both got previous experience working in General Practice.
Occasionally, the trainee GPs may ask to video a consultation as part of their on-going training. The receptionist will ask you beforehand to check if you are happy with this. You can decline to have the appointment recorded at any stage and this will have no bearing at all on the treatment you receive.
Our GP Trainers will regularly undertake joint surgeries, where either the trainee GP or the experienced GP leads the consultation but the other will also be present. Again, the receptionist will check with you beforehand to make sure you are happy with two doctors being present for your consultation.
During the time that registrars are based at West Street Surgery there will be no reduction in the number of appointments available. As registers move through their training programme and gain experience the Practice will actually be able to offer more appointments as the number of appointments offered in each of their clinics will increase.
We will continue to host final medical students from the University of Brighton who are required to undertake a short four week placement in General Practice.
